In a joint statement to Parliament, Sophie Winkleman and neuroscientist Jared Cooney Horvath advise of an inconvenient truth – that EdTech does not enhance learning, it erodes it.
We have the academic, clinical and real world studies that show learning declines when screens enter the classroom. The OECD has stated that students who use computers very frequently at school do a lot worse in most learning outcomes.
Human beings evolved to learn from people not digital devices. We learn from mirroring, mimicking and synchrony. Digital technology distorts or removes these cues that drive deep understanding. Teachers have a deep, intuitive grasp of a pupil’s understanding which guides pupils forward, helping them stay engaged, pushing through frustration and deeply connected with ideas.
This is a state of emergency and we must pause and rewind on the rollout of screens in education.
