From today, Australia is protecting childhood from BigTech.
Australia has raised the minimum age for social media to 16. Children can no longer form business relationships with BigTech and BigTech cannot use their personal data to keep them hooked on their device with feeds, likes and alerts.
Bravo Australia.
Former schools minister, Lord Nash, has said Australia’s social media ban for under-16s is a wake up call for Britain. He said his amendment to the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill “would adopt what Australian has done – at no cost to the taxpayer and with overwhelming public support.”
We agree. Poll after poll shows that people want to raise the minimum age, including Gen-Z. We hope the UK follows Australia’s lead and prioritises the protection of children online.
