UK Parliament Emergency Summit

November 24, 2025

We recently held an EdTech summit in Parliament – a call for an urgent rethink of EdTech in UK schools.

Close Screens Open Minds hosted the summit with Laura Trott MP in partnership with our patron Sophie Winkleman and campaign group SafeScreens.

The summit brought together leading voices from medicine, education, child development and digital rights.

Our exceptional line up of speakers gave overwhelming evidence: EdTech is harming learning, wellbeing, safety and privacy – and the UK is sleep walking into a screen-first education model with no proof it works.

Close Screens Open Minds is pushing for urgent national standards on classroom technology:

➡️ pause EdTech rollout until independent proof shows it improves learning
➡️ introduce national health and sleep protections in line with medical guidance
➡️ update child-safety and product-safety laws to regulate digital classroom tools
➡️ establish strict data-privacy rules to stop commercial tracking of children
➡️ prioritise books, handwriting, focussed attention and human teaching over devices
➡️ rethink the rollout of fully digitised exams, scheduled to be in place by 2030
